Anthony DiMauro, DMA, is a Philadelphia-born conductor and educator known for his expressiveness, courage, and conviction that well-led ensembles model the habits that are most important for our society鈥攍istening and responding to all, solving problems, taking something that works well enough and polishing it until it shines鈥攁nd all of this in the service of an art form that means something to our listeners and that encourages them to see the world from fresh perspectives. He currently serves as Director of Instrumental Activities at 麻豆原创, where he directs the Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble while offering music coursework that engages students by integrating listening skills with social context.
DiMauro鈥檚 tenure as the first doctoral candidate in orchestral conducting at the University of Alabama included performances with the Tuscaloosa Symphony Orchestra, the Huxford Symphony Orchestra, the UA Campus Orchestra, the UA Contemporary Ensemble, and UA Opera Theatre, where he served as Principal Conductor on productions of Suor Angelica, H盲nsel und Gretel, and L鈥檈lisir d鈥檃more. Under his leadership, the Campus Orchestra revolutionized its programming with student and faculty premieres, growing its membership by 20%.
Before transitioning to higher education, DiMauro directed four ensembles at East Shore Middle School (Milford, CT) while developing a Modern Music curriculum that integrated collaborative performance, critical listening, and music technology. His community-based teaching experience includes positions with Yale鈥檚 Music in Schools Initiative (New Haven, CT) and Sistema Ravinia (Highland Park, IL). He has served as a guest artist and clinician for state and regional festivals and conferences. These experiences inspired DiMauro鈥檚 research on community-building practices in mixed-instrument ensembles, resulting in presentations at CODA and RSA national conferences.
DiMauro鈥檚 prominent conducting teachers include Ransom Wilson, Mallory Thompson, Victor Yampolsky, John Nardolillo, Laura Jackson, Craig Kier, Robert Hasty, Donald Nally, and Morgan Luttig. DiMauro earned a master鈥檚 degree from Northwestern University studying trumpet performance with Robert Sullivan and completed his undergraduate studies in trumpet at Northwestern under Charles Geyer and Barbara Butler, graduating Magna Cum Laude. His career as a trumpeter included performances with the Jacksonville Symphony, Illinois Symphony, Illinois Philharmonic, West Michigan Symphony, and touring with Broadway鈥檚 An American in Paris.
Above all, DiMauro is committed to building genuine relationships between musicians and their communities through honest storytelling, community-responsive programming, and memorable performances.
